Materials care: the ritual that preserves your jewel

A NEXO jewel is the tangible testimony of a moment, an expression of your style, and often, of your own identity. It is for this reason that we do not conceive of it for a single season, but to transcend and accompany generations.

The recycled sterling silver and the 18- and 24-karat gold mantle that distinguish our creations deserve care equal to their standing. In this guide, you will find the gestures that preserve their brilliance, the errors that dim it, and the moment to entrust your piece to our Atelier. If you wish to understand how that brilliance is born, we invite you to discover our savoir-faire.

At NEXO, we back every creation with a lifetime warranty; a pact between your history and our hands. This guide gathers the intimate gestures with which you honor and extend the life of that shared legacy.

Protection against external agents

I. Protect your jewelry from chemicals

  • Follow the proper order: apply perfumes, creams, and hairsprays first, wait for them to be fully absorbed, and let your jewelry be the final gesture when dressing. The Maison rule: the jewel goes on last and comes off first.

  • Avoid household chores while wearing your jewelry: aggressive chemicals like ammonia or bleach can permanently damage the structure and color of the pieces.

  • Special attention to delicate finishes: sterling silver pieces with high-end gold plating—like our collection—are particularly vulnerable to chemical abrasion. Think of gold plating as delicate skin: cosmetics and cleaning products wear it down prematurely.

II. Protect your jewelry from water and perspiration

  • Remove your jewelry before physical activity: perspiration contains salts and natural acids that accelerate the tarnishing of silver and dull the lustre of metals.

  • Keep them away from water: remove them before showering, swimming, or engaging in any aquatic activity. Chlorine and salt water are among the most aggressive adversaries of brilliance.

  • Dry them thoroughly: if your jewel accidentally gets wet, immediately wipe it with a soft, clean cloth until all moisture is completely removed.

Specialized cleaning by material type

«Each material has its own temperament. Knowing it is half of the care.»

I. Sterling silver and gold-finished jewelry

  • Ritual for tarnished pieces: line a container with aluminum foil. Add warm water, a few drops of a gentle, pH-neutral soap solution, and baking soda. Let the jewelry rest for 5 minutes. Upon removing them, ensure the original silver color has returned; if there are crevices that have not been fully cleaned, use a cotton swab or a soft-bristled brush. Finally, rinse with plenty of water and dry with a microfiber or cotton cloth. Please discard the use of toothpaste: its abrasive particles scratch the metal irreversibly.

  • Warning on home remedies: popular methods using salt, vinegar, or baking soda applied through direct rubbing are intended solely for solid silver. Keep them away from gold-plated jewelry at all costs; they attack and thin the plating. When in doubt, rely only on warm water, neutral soap, and a microfiber cloth.

II. Diamonds

  • To recover all their fire: immerse the piece in warm, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes to soften accumulated residue. With a soft-bristled brush, carefully clean the gem, paying special attention to the underside of the setting, where grease accumulates and robs the diamond of its light. Perform this cleaning regularly and consider an annual professional inspection. Avoid contact with chemicals that could cloud their transparency.

III. Cultured pearls and organic gems

«Pearls are living matter: they were born in water and their nacre breathes. They demand the delicacy reserved for the truly singular.»

  • Gentle cleaning: after each use, caress the pearls or amber individually with a cotton cloth lightly dampened with pure water. Never immerse them completely in water or use alcohols, chemical soaps, or ultrasonic cleaners, as you would damage their surface irreversibly.

  • Avoid any friction: pearls are much softer than other gems and scratch with extreme ease.

  • Flat drying: leave your necklaces or pearl bracelets to dry spread horizontally on a clean surface. Never hang them while damp, as the weight of the water will permanently stretch the silk thread that binds the gems.

IV. Precious and semi-precious stones

  • Emeralds: these stones traditionally receive treatments with natural oils to enhance their clarity. Avoid any chemical product that could dry out these oils and, under no circumstances, resort to ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

  • Rubies and Sapphires: their high hardness allows for cleaning similar to that of diamonds: warm water, neutral soap, and a soft-bristled brush.

  • Softer stones: topazes, aquamarines, and other gems demand more careful handling. Use exclusively soft chamois cloths, avoid chemical products, and shield them from extreme heat sources and sudden temperature changes.

Proper storage: the rest of your jewel

Rest is also part of the care. These three principles guard your piece while it awaits its next moment.

  • Separate your jewelry by material: store each piece in an individual compartment. Direct contact between metals or rubbing against high-hardness gems (such as diamonds or sapphires) causes severe microscopic abrasions on gold, silver, and nacre.

  • Avoid humidity and rubber: store your pieces in a dry place, away from the bathroom. Keep rubber bands and rubber objects out of the jewelry box: they release sulfur, the same compound that tarnishes silver, even without direct contact.

  • Use suitable cases:

    • For jewelry with metals and stones: padded cases with individual compartments or individual polyethylene airtight bags, accompanied by a small silica gel packet to mitigate environmental humidity.

    • For pearls and organic gems: cotton, natural silk, or velvet sachets, always with ventilation. Airtight plastic containers deprive nacre of air, dehydrating it and dimming its orient.

Periodic reviews: the Atelier watches over your jewel

Every NEXO creation bears our brand hallmark, a serial number, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

This coverage excludes damage from accident or misuse, loss or theft of the piece, and any intervention carried out by an unauthorized third party. You may consult the full conditions in our shipping and returns policy.

When to entrust your piece to us:

  • Examination of settings: Write to us if you detect loose settings, stones that move slightly, or if the piece has suffered an impact or fall that may have compromised its structure.

  • Verification of clasps and fixed elements: Our master jewelers review the condition of clasps, check set or attached pieces (pearls, cabochons), and evaluate the wear on silk threads and prongs.

  • Specialized Atelier services: The restoration of gold plating, professional metal polishing, and the traditional stringing of a pearl necklace require expert hands. These are the same hands that bring our collections and our recreated jewelry to life.

The value of your jewelry beyond time

A well-cared-for jewel preserves its beauty and material value, and with them, the history, the moments, and the profound emotional significance entrusted to it. Each piece tells a story, and it deserves the necessary gestures to continue shining through generations.

Following these guidelines ensures that your creation continues to be the unalterable symbol of your memories. At NEXO, we guard legacies, and yours begins the moment you decide to care for it.

FAQ Section

When in contact with sulfur in the air, sweat, or cosmetics, silver forms a layer of sulfide on its surface that darkens it. This occurs naturally in any piece, regardless of its quality, and is reversed with a gentle cleaning with pH-neutral soap or, in the case of solid silver, a baking soda and water paste.

Line a container with aluminum foil, add warm water, a few drops of delicate liquid soap, and baking soda. Let the jewelry rest for 5 minutes. Upon removing them, ensure the original silver color has returned; if there are crevices that have not been fully cleaned, use a cotton swab or a soft-bristled brush. Finally, rinse the jewelry with plenty of water and dry with a microfiber/cotton cloth.

We advise against it. Most toothpastes contain abrasive particles that scratch silver permanently and wear down gold plating. Warm water with neutral soap and a microfiber cloth achieve the same result without risk.

We recommend removing it before showering, bathing, swimming, or resting. Chlorine, salt water, and nightly friction accelerate the wear of gold plating and dull the lustre of silver.

Apply cosmetics and perfumes before putting them on, avoid water and sweat, clean them only with neutral soap and microfiber, and store them in an individual compartment. When the plating loses intensity over the years, our Atelier can restore it.

Any manufacturing defect, with the commitment to offer you the best solution in the shortest possible time: replacement, repair, or refund. Damage from accident or misuse, loss or theft of the piece, and interventions by unauthorized third parties are excluded. If your item arrives damaged during transport, notify us within 24 hours of receipt. You will find the full conditions in our shipping and returns policy.
